The month of October is celebrated as “National Chiropractic Health Month” (NCHM) each year in the United States. The month-long celebration hosted by the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) is aimed at educating healthcare consumers about the potential benefits of chiropractic care and how chiropractic physicians are helping patients to optimize health and wellbeing.
In 2014, NCHM’s theme is “Conservative Care First!” with the goal to educate people on why a conservative approach to pain management and health enhancement is both practical and effective. Usually patients turn to chiropractic services and other conservative modes of care only when more complex and riskier treatments fail to provide results. This belief has been reversed today, with more medical research and guidelines lending support to the theory that patients should try out conventional approaches to pain management before considering other alternatives.
A conservative care model lays more emphasis on cost-effective and safer treatment modalities rather than addictive medications for healthcare. Recent studies report the increased over reliance by the US population on prescription pain killers that just simply mask the pain but do not actually cure it. In fact, the number of Americans taking high-dose pain killers and other drugs has significantly increased causing up to 17,000 deaths in 2010. Health care consumers need to explore and understand the potential benefits of traditional options before using pain relief drugs or undergoing other risky procedures.
Nowadays, chiropractic physicians are the highest-rated healthcare practitioners for managing different types of pain – acute and chronic low back pain, neck shoulder and knee pain, and much more. The conservative approach for managing painful conditions includes chiropractic manipulation combined with physical exercise programs. Chiropractors follow a patient-centric approach by encouraging greater interaction and communication for accurate diagnosis and developing cost-effective treatment modalities.
With the more than 130,000 doctors of chiropractic (DCs), chiropractic assistants (CAs) and chiropractic doctoral students practicing countrywide, NCHM is a strong platform to encourage their participation in fun social media activities throughout the month to create more awareness about chiropractic services.
