Efficacy of the Knee Joint Injection Utilizing Cortisone or Synvisc

Knee Joint InjectionKnee pain is a common problem and causes can range from acute injuries to medical conditions such as osteoarthritis (OA). Healthcare centers in New York offer a variety of non-surgical treatments to relieve the symptoms of knee pain. When oral medication fails to work, injections of cartilage supplements such as hyaluronic acid agents, cortisteroids, and injections of hypertonic dextrose or prolotherapy are administered. There are divergent views about the effectiveness of joint pain injections.

Do Knee Pain Injections Work?

Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the knee joints, lubricating and allowing the joints to move smoothly over each other. However, in people with OA, the acid breaks down and hyaluronic acid supplements like Synvisc are injected into the knees. The injections are administered weekly over a few weeks.

Injection of corticosteroids directly into the knee joint is expected to provide relief from pain and inflammation quickly. However, as corticosteroids can breakdown knee cartilage, the number of injections that can be administered are limited.

In a recent study, researchers at Tufts Medical Center in Boston found that injections are the best remedy for knee arthritis pain. The team compared different treatment options and found that corticosteroid and hyaluronic acid injections were the most effective solution. According to an NBC report on the study, the researchers said that joint injections offered the greatest pain relief as they brought the medicine directly into the osteoarthritic joint.

However, some experts point out that the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) specifically recommends against hyaluronic acid in the second edition of their guidelines for the treatment for osteoarthritis. Also, intra-articular corticosteroids are not even on the AAOS recommendation list. The only drugs that the AAOS does recommend are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and generically available pain relievers.

The bottom line is that though Synvisc or cortisone injections do not alter the course of underlying joint disease, they can provide temporary relief when other preliminary measures are not successful. Corticosteroid injections help relieve the pain caused by different types of arthritis as well as pain after an injury or surgery. In established health care centers, such injections are effective as part of a much larger treatment plan.

HealthQuest’s Versatile Approach to Treating Knee Pain

At HealthQuest, we rely on a combination to techniques to provide relief for joint pain based on individual conditions. We use the latest technology available which enhances patient outcomes.

The first step in the treatment is a consultation and physical examination to evaluate the condition and arrive at a proper diagnosis and find the root cause of the pain. This health care center has diagnostic facilities such as x-ray and MRI, which makes things really convenient for patients who need further testing. Based on the diagnosis, the orthopedic specialist will develop a customized treatment plan that may include a combination of modalities such as:

  • Rest – to minimize pain and speed up recovery
  • Ice and Heat Application – to reduce the intensity of pain and swelling
  • Physical therapy – to prevent re-injury and strengthen the muscles that support the knee
  • Medication – pain-relieving drugs and NSAIDs to reduce inflammation
  • Chiropractic care
  • Knee Braces – to stabilize the knee joint and relieve anterior knee pain
  • Game Ready cold therapy system – special knee wraps for faster, smoother recovery
  • Knee injections

So injections including prolotherapy are used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan at HealthQuest to provide quick relief from knee pain. A study published in 2013 by researchers from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health showed that prolotherapy resulted in clinically meaningful sustained improvement of pain, function, and stiffness scores for knee osteoarthritis. Here again, the use of advanced technology improves results. The physicians employ an advanced ultrasound-guided imaging technique to precisely guide the needles to the affected areas.

HealthQuest’s comprehensive multi-specialty approach to pain management is a major reason for the treatment’s success. Neurology, orthopedics, chiropractic, physical therapy, and neuromuscular rehabilitation are combined to deliver optimal results.

The observations that patients make after they undergo treatment at this reliable Brooklyn-based health care center show just how effective their experience was:

“For those of you with chronic pain like me – there is finally hope! At ‘HealthQuest’! They have helped me tremendously. I have tried many, many other facilities – none of which gave me any pain relief so I continued to suffer, until I was told about HealthQuest.

The staff at HealthQuest is different. They coordinate together as a team to give each patent individual attention – their doctors, therapists, and chiropractors focus on relieving your pain – that is their Quest managing your pain”.
