Short-term, Low Carb Diet better than Low Fat Diet for Weight Loss, say Experts

Dietary guidance is an important part of these programs, but you should also know what experts are saying about the diet you should follow to lose weight.

Medical News Today recently reported that Mayo Clinic physicians say that a low-carb diet could be better than a low-fat diet for weight loss in the short-term. Their advice is based on a review of 41 trials that measured the impact of low-carb diets on weight loss, which showed that participants who followed a low-carb diet lost between 2.5-9 more pounds than those who followed a low-fat diet. The goal of the review was to find out if low-carb diets are safe and effective for weight loss, and heart and metabolic health.

Typically, the foods for a low-carb diet would include proteins such as meat, poultry, fish and eggs, and some nonstarchy vegetables. A low-carb diet would mean excluding or limiting most grains, legumes, fruits, breads, sweets, pastas and starchy vegetables, and possibly even nuts and seeds. Some low-carb diet plans allow limited quantities of certain fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

Though the studies had varying definitions of what constitutes a low-carb diet, they showed that compared with other diets, low-carb diets promoted weight loss without adverse effects on blood pressure, glucose, and cholesterol.

The Mayo Clinic physicians recommend that those looking to lose weight eat “real foods” – natural foods that are not a product of industry. Regardless of the diet followed, people should avoid highly processed items including processed meats such as bacon, sausage, deli meats, hot dogs, and ham. They also caution that patients considering a low-carb diet should be told there is very little evidence about its long-term safety and effectiveness.
