This year, June 15 -21 is National Men’s Health Week (NMHW). This annual event, which is sponsored by the Men’s Health Forum (MHF), aims to increase awareness about preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys.
National Men’s Health Week was first recognized as an event after it was officially passed by Congress and signed by President William Jefferson Clinton in 1994. The weeklong campaign provides healthcare providers, public policymakers and individuals a strong platform to encourage men and boys to lead a healthy lifestyle and seek regular medical advice and early treatment for disease and injury.
Men are at risk for a variety of health issues such as stroke, depression, cardiac arrest, diabetes and different types of cancers such as colon cancer, prostate cancer, colorectal cancer and testicular cancer. Reports suggest that the average life expectancy for men in United States is almost 5 years less than women. It is estimated that about 12.1% of men aged 18 years and above are in fair or poor health. The NMHW campaign offers the opportunity to educate men about the important steps that they can take to improve their health.
The theme for 2015 campaign is – ‘Healthy Living for Men’. It highlights the need for men to incorporate positive health behaviors in everyday life in order to improve both physical and mental health. The event supports exercise and physical activity programs that help men to carry out regular activities and enhance their overall health and wellbeing. It also highlights the importance of visiting a healthcare professional for regular checkups and preventive screenings.
As part of this annual campaign, multi-specialty healthcare centers, healthcare agencies and medical fitness centers will host a series of programs such as seminars, presentations, health fairs, educational events and contests to encourage men to lead a healthy lifestyle and seek regular medical care and early treatment for disease and injury.
Many health problems that commonly affect men can be easily prevented or improved through early diagnosis. Conducting regular health check-ups helps detect disease in its early stage and determine correct treatment modality. Men should actively communicate with their physicians to understand the various diagnostic tests suitable for them and how often they should undergo these tests. Incorporating significant lifestyle with a healthy diet plan and exercise can help maintain physical fitness. In addition, resolving smoking and alcohol dependence, reducing stress and getting adequate sleep is crucial.
