Weight loss is the most common New Year resolution and many people enroll in weight loss programs offered by leading NYC healthcare centers to achieve their goal. Being overweight increases the risk of several health conditions such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, osteoarthritis, and cancer. Most people who are overweight and lose weight end up regaining and exceeding their original body weight. Following systematic and healthy eating habits can help in better weight management. According to a new study from the University of Copenhagen, people who formulate systematic rules for eating and adhere to them are noticeably better at reducing their weight when compared to others who follow special diets or eat for pleasure and satisfaction.
The study, a collaborative effort among researchers from the Department of Biomedical Sciences, Hvidovre Hospital and the Department of Food and Resource Economics at the University of Copenhagen investigated what was necessary to maintain the weight loss. The researchers found that people who are good at keeping their weight off after losing it don’t eat to accommodate desire, hunger and satisfaction or follow special diets. On the other hand, their main goal is “weight maintenance”. This led them to develop their own individual systems for what, when and how much to eat.
The researchers found that study participants who succeeded in keeping or maintaining their body weight after 12 months created systematic routines that fitted into their daily lives. This required great effort and high discipline.
The study signifies the need to incorporate small, systematic and achievable lifestyle habits to lead a healthy life. Individuals need to follow a systematic eating routine that suits their lifestyle. Mindful eating can help maintain lost weight. Maintain a list of what you are eating as this will help you spot potential problem areas. Avoid excessive intake of alcohol, sugary foods, and saturated fats. Focus on getting the calories and nutrients you need to fuel your daily activities and exercise. Include whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and beans in your diet as these healthy foods contain complex carbs.
