Leading pain management centers in Brooklyn, NYC will join the celebration of “World Physical Therapy (PT) Day” on 8th September – a day dedicated to physical therapists all over the world every year, recognizing them for their work. Sponsored by the World Confederation of Physical Therapy (WCPT), the one-day campaign is a strong platform for physical therapists from all over the world to generate awareness about the crucial contributions their profession makes to keep people healthy, free from pain, mobile and independent.
Chronic pain is the number one cause of long-term disability in the United States, with reports suggesting that about 100 million Americans suffer from significant chronic pain or acute pain. Chronic pain can occur due to many factors such as muscle or ligament strain, injury to the bones/spines, normal wear-and tear effects of aging, and chronic conditions like arthritis. In addition, incorrect posture, heavy or strenuous work and other abnormalities of organs can also result in pain. Physical therapy is an effective non-invasive option, which involves a combination of modalities aimed at easing pain symptoms and increasing flexibility, strength, coordination and balance. The one-day event on September 8 aims to recognize the transformative power of physical therapy and the prominent role that physical therapists and physical therapy assistants play in helping people to effectively manage pain, improve mobility, and lead a healthy life.
World Physical Therapy Day was first observed in the year 1996 by the World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT) and September 8 (the date the WCPT was founded in 1951) was officially finalized as the date for the annual event. Since 1996, the event has become a rallying point for the community to acknowledge the hard-work physical therapists do, and the versatility of physical therapy in improving quality of life. The theme for the 2018 event is “Movement for Health” which signifies the need for people of all age groups to remain active. Physical therapists help people incorporate a physical activity regimen into their daily life and devise suitable plans for them regardless of their age.
As part of the 2018 campaign, hundreds of events and activities will be conducted worldwide to raise awareness about the potential of physical therapy, and the hard work of physical therapists. The campaign message of World Physical Therapy Day 2018 is – “Physical therapy and mental health”, which signifies the role that physical therapy and physical activity have in improving mental health. WCPT offers a package of resources to help physical therapists plan and publicize several events for the campaign. These include leaflets (to distribute directly to patients and the public), posters/postcards, stickers, banners, artwork, logos and press releases. In addition, people can follow WCPT events via several social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook and make others participate in these events with the hashtag #WorldPTDay.
