May 31 is World No Tobacco Day (WNTD)Every year, World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is observed on May 31. Sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and its global partners, this annual campaign aims to highlight the harmful and deadly effects of tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure. Tobacco is deadly in any form and threatens the lung health of everyone exposed to it.

Reports from the World Health Organization (WHO) suggest that tobacco use kills more than 7 million people around the world each year. It is estimated that tobacco kills one person every 4 seconds. The use of tobacco in any form can lead to many serious illnesses such as heart diseases, lung cancer, stroke, high blood pressure, heart attack, and asthma.

The concept of WNTD was initiated in the year 1987 by the World Health Organization (WHO) to draw global attention to the tobacco epidemic and the preventable death and disease it causes.  It also serves as a call to action, advocating for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption and engaging stakeholders across multiple sectors in the fight for tobacco control.

With the theme Tobacco and Lung Health”, the 2019 annual campaign aims to increase awareness about the negative impact that tobacco has on people’s lung health, from cancer to chronic respiratory disease and the fundamental role lungs play for the health and well-being of all people.

Smokers are up to 22 times more likely to develop lung cancer in their lifetime, when compared to non-smokers. Non-smokers exposed to second-hand smoke at home or other places have a 30-40 percent higher risk of developing lung cancer. Active smokers could enroll in smoking cessation programs which can help them quit by addressing nicotine addiction.

As part of the 2019 one-day campaign, reputable pain management and rehabilitation centers across the world will host a series of programs like publishing press releases, displaying informational posters, rollup, web banners, Tobacco Free initiative publications, GIFs and videos that help educate the public about the harms of tobacco use.

Join the #NoTobacco #HealthForAll movement around the world! You can connect with people across the world and join hands with them to generate awareness about the harms of tobacco usage. You can participate by sharing your favorite breathtaking moments and activities on social media, and telling the world why these take your breath away, instead of tobacco. Post a photo or video footage of 10-15 seconds on social media using the hash tag #NoTobacco showing what takes your breath away. In the caption of the photo or as part of your lines in the video, explain why this takes your breath away and why it should never be tobacco by using the hashtags #NoTobacco. You can tag @WHO and at least three of your friends, encouraging them to join the online conversation.
