“National Health Center Week (NHCW)” is observed during the second week of August in the United States. Sponsored by the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC), the campaign aims to raise awareness about America’s health centers and celebrate their mission and accomplishments over the past five decades. In 2019, NHCW runs from August 4-10.
Reports suggest that healthcare centers serve about 28 million patients in the US – a number that continues to outgrow the demand for affordable primary care. It is estimated that one in every fifteen people living in the US depends on healthcare services. Healthcare centers started functioning in the country about 50 years ago as a pilot project during President Lyndon Johnson’s War on Poverty. Over these years, these centers have evolved considerably and play a predominant role in delivering high quality, cost effective, accessible care while serving as critical economic engines to power local economies.
The 2019 campaign offers pain management and rehabilitation centers a unique platform to provide innovative solutions to the most critical health care issues within their communities and reach out beyond the walls of conventional medicine to address the social determinants of health affecting special patient populations. The theme for this year’s campaign is – “Celebrating America’s Health Centers: Rooted in Communities”. As part of the theme, the National Association of Community Health Centers invites health centers and their communities to celebrate the ways that health centers are “Rooted in Communities.”
As part of the 2019 NCHW campaign, a host of events including health fairs, press conferences, visits by Members of Congress and state officials to local health centers, patient appreciation events, health contests, back-to-school drives, community breakfasts, free health screenings and more will be held across the country. Each day of the NHCW 2019 weekly campaign will focus on a specific theme
- Sunday, 8/4 – Social Determinants Day (Creating Nutrient-Rich Soil)
- Monday, 8/5 – Healthcare for the Homeless Day
- Tuesday, 8/6 – Agricultural Worker Health Day
