Aging cannot be avoided. However, a lot can be done to slow down the aging process by improving your physical, mental and social wellbeing. September is “Healthy Aging Month” in the United States – a time to set yourself and your body to grow older in a healthy manner. Created by “Carolyn Worthington,” editor-in-chief of Healthy Aging® Magazine and executive director of Healthy Aging, the annual observance month is designed to build national attention on the positive aspects of growing older. The campaign is a unique program that offers practical ideas for adults (aged 45 years or older) to adopt positive measures that can help improve their physical, social, financial and mental wellness.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the number of US adults aged 65 years or older will more than double to about 71 million, by the end of 2030. Aging brings an increase in the prevalence of chronic health conditions like hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, and dementia. The rapidly increasing number of older Americans emphasizes the need to pay attention to the subject of healthy aging. The mission of Healthy Aging® Month is to encourage local level healthy aging events that promote taking personal responsibility for one’s health, be it physically, socially, mentally or financially.
Initiated more than 20 years ago, the Healthy Aging campaign aims to provide people with valuable information for successful aging. As people become old, they become less physically active. The 2019 monthly campaign is a strong platform to encourage people of all ages, (especially older Americans) to get active and incorporate simple lifestyle changes in order to prevent or control chronic health conditions. Routine medical check-ups and screening are important for healthy aging.
Practicing regular exercise can give numerous benefits. Regular exercise can help strengthen muscles, reduce chronic conditions (like high blood pressure, diabetes), and help maintain an ideal body weight. Strengthening and stretching exercises enhance muscle flexibility and improves pain related to chronic conditions like arthritis and fibromyalgia. Therefore, adequate physical activity and exercise combined with healthy eating habits helps people stay clear of chronic diseases. Apart from this, staying away from the habit of smoking and alcohol consumption is crucial to improve overall health in old age. Getting enrolled in weight loss programs and smoking cessation programs offered by reputable healthcare centers in Brooklyn, NYC would be an ideal option.
September is the perfect time to celebrate Healthy Aging Month since it is a time when many people think about getting started on new tasks after the summer. The month-long observance was built on the concept that a combination of physical, social, mental and financial fitness is important in the pursuit of a positive lifestyle. As part of the 2019 annual observance, reputable pain management and rehabilitation centers across the world will host a series of events such as awareness initiatives, educational programs, displaying informational pamphlets, videos, books, printed materials, web pages and blogs across the country throughout the month of May.
Take Part in Healthy Aging Month in September! Practice healthy lifestyle habits for successful aging.
