Joint hypermobility or joint laxity is a hereditary condition in which a joint easily moves beyond its normal range. Athletes are susceptible to this condition and while some may benefit from the increased joint flexibility, it can cause pain, stiffness and fatigue in others. At HealthQuest, we provide treatment to strengthen the specific muscle groups to support the hypermobile joints, improve posture, and boost strength, tone and fitness. Our rehabilitation center based in Brooklyn, New York has expert orthopedists, pain doctors, and physical-medicine physicians on board and specializes in treatment of various types of sports injuries.
Symptoms of Joint Hypermobility
In some cases, joint hypermobility can lead to cartilage degeneration and arthritis over time. Certain hypermobile joints are also at risk of injuries such as a sprained ligament.
Assessment and Diagnosis
As this joint disorder is associated with a wide range of symptoms, our multispecialty health care team will evaluate the effect of the symptoms on the person’s quality of life. This comprehensive assessment will be used to determine the treatment and support the individual would need.
Assessment will include a full history, symptom scoring and evaluation of activity levels, including sports, physical activity, sleep and muscle strength. Posture and gait assessment will be performed to determine if foot orthotics can help. Blood tests and X-rays may be used to rule out rheumatoid arthritis or other conditions associated with joint pain.
