Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI)

Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI)

Work and sports-related repetitive strain injuries (RSI) typically occur in the hand, arm, foot, ankle and shoulder due to incorrect use or overuse. The condition can be painful and debilitating. An established rehabilitation and pain management center based in Brooklyn, New York, HealthQuest specializes in RSI treatment. We help patients return to the highest level of independence and function as possible.

Causes and Symptoms

RSI is generally caused by incorrect posture, repetitive activity and overuse, causinginflammation and damage to the joint and soft tissues such as the muscles, nerves and tendons. Damaging repetition occurs in many sports such as tennis, golf and long distance running as well as when playing musical instruments. Long hours of computer work can lead to carpal tunnel syndrome. Certain medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis can also cause RSI.

Pain caused by RSI can affect a small area or the entire limb, and will worsen with activity that involves repetitive movements or posture. Typical symptoms are:

  • Sudden and sharp pain
  • Persistent aches
  • Numbness and tremors
  • Clumsiness
  • Fatigue or loss of strength
  • Loss of mobility
  • Weakness in the hands or forearms
  • Chronically cold hands

RSI can also be present without pain. Work, sports activities and even simple tasks will become increasingly difficult to continue.
