Septic Arthritis

Septic arthritis is inflammation of a joint due to a bacterial or fungal infection. HealthQuest provides septic arthritis treatment to address joint pain and swelling associated with the condition, and to prevent it from getting progressively worse. Our multispecialty health care center in Brooklyn, NY, offers specialized treatment for various types of arthritis.

Risk Factors and Symptoms

Infectious arthritis typically affects the knees, but it also can affect the hips, shoulders and other joints. It can develop when an infection, such as a skin infection, spreads through the bloodstream to a joint or when bacteria enter the joint area through a puncture wound, injection, or surgery. Risks of infection are higher for people with arthritis, gout, or lupus, and other chronic medical conditions such as diabetes or cancer.

Symptoms include:

  • Severe joint pain that gets worse with movement
  • Warmth, redness, and swelling around the joint
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Weakness and fatigue
  • Poor appetite
  • Rapid heart rate

Early treatment can help prevent joint degeneration and permanent damage.

At HealthQuest, diagnosing the condition will involve a physical examination, history-taking and lab tests to determine the cause of the joint pain and the severity of the infection. Imaging tests such as x-rays and an MRI scan may also be conducted to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment Approaches

HealthQuest offers treatment for septic arthritis and joint pain using proven modalities. Based on the type of bacteria causing the infection, our physician will prescribe appropriate antibiotics to treat it. A customized pain management plan will be developed to the patient’s needs, which would include:

  • Oral and intravenous antibiotics
  • Synovial fluid (joint fluid) drainage to relieve pain
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
  • Splinting the joint
  • Physical therapy
  • Chiropractic care

Our pain management specialists also provide guidance on corrective exercises, lifestyle modifications, and nutrition.

With prompt diagnosis and early treatment of the infection, we help patients resume their normal activities and avoid permanent joint damage. To learn more about our treatment for arthritis and schedule a consultation, call 718-769-2521 or send an e-mail to
