Tenosynovitis

Tenosynovitis is tendon sheath inflammation caused by injury to the tendon or surrounding muscle or bone. This work-related injury is common among those who perform a variety of repetitive-motion activities. Athletes are also prone to this musculoskeletal and connective tissue disorder. A leading provider of care for work-related and sports injuries, HealthQuest offers nonsurgical treatments to relieve the pain, inflammation and disability associated with tenosynovitis.

Causes and Symptoms

Tendon sheath inflammation usually affects the wrist, hands, and feet, but it can also occur in the shoulder, elbow, and knee. Causes include:

  • Repetitive-stress activities
  • Excessive or unaccustomed exercise
  • Extreme trauma
  • Sudden sprains or strains
  • Prolonged physical activity such as running
  • Standing in the same position for a long time
  • Medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or gout

The typical symptoms of this condition are: joint pain and stiffness, difficulty with gripping if the thumb is affected, swelling, redness and tenderness in the affected area, and fever.

Diagnosis

At our New York pain management center, our physicians work with advanced resources to diagnose and treat various types of musculoskeletal injuries. Tenosynovitis can usually be diagnosed by a physical exam and tests to gauge the extent of pain and immobility. If necessary, blood tests, X-rays, or an MRI scan may be used to confirm the diagnosis or rule out other potential causes such as arthritis.

Treatment

We offer an array of noninvasive treatments to reduce the inflammation and pain caused by tendon sheath inflammation:

  • Braces or splints to immobilize the affected area
  • Heat or cold application to address pain and swelling
  • Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)
  • Over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Game Ready cold compression therapy
  • Antibiotics to fight inflammation
  • Massage
  • Ultrasound
  • Physical therapy
  • Chiropractic treatment

Exercises to strengthen the muscles and prevent future injury are a key component of our treatment programs.
