Fitness Programs for Active Older Adults

A leading rehabilitation center in Brooklyn, New York, HealthQuest offers a number of health and fitness programs for active older adults. As part of our Slip and Fall and Balance and Rehab Program, we encourage participants to engage in other fitness programs such as SilverSneakers Fitness Program, and "Chair" yoga program to help them enjoy a life of fitness and fun.

SilverSneakers Fitness Program

Included as a benefit with your health plans, HealthQuest’s SilverSneakers® Fitness program allows older adults to take greater control of their health - at no additional cost.

An exercise program especially for older adults, SilverSneakers Fitness program combines physical activity, healthy lifestyle, and social oriented programming. Members can enjoy aerobics, yoga and aquatics classes. Treadmills, weights, pools and other amenities are included.

Led by certified instructors, fitness classes designed for all abilities help members achieve their health and fitness goals. The exercise programs increase your muscle strength, range of movement, and routine activities.

Classes at Kings Bay Y

Located across the street at Nostrand Avenue (Between Ave U and V), Kings Bay Y is a Jewish Community Center that serves Brooklyn with diverse programs every day. This center offers social, cultural, educational and recreational services to people of all ages. Different fitness programs are offered here, which include Yoga, SilverSneakers Fitness Program, Cardio Workout and other fitness training programs, swim classes, and more.

Chair Yoga Program

Chair Yoga is a gentle form of yoga practiced while seated on a chair. It enables persons who cannot do standing exercises enjoy the full experience of a yoga class. This low-impact yoga workout is designed to increase flexibility, reduce pain, help your body and mind to relax, and relieve stress. Classes are offered at Paerdegat Library in Brooklyn, NY.

In recent years, there have been many scientific studies that examined the effectiveness of Chair Yoga for seniors. The team of researchers from Florida Atlantic University conducted a study to investigate the effects of chair yoga on adults with osteoarthritis in their lower extremities. The research suggests that chair yoga is effective in relieving osteoarthritis pain. Practiced along with HealthQuest’s Slip and Fall and Balance and Rehab Program, this may be a good non-pharmacologic intervention to reduce pain and restore balance.
